At just twenty-four years old, Alastair decided to leave England and cycle around the world. His epic journey took him through 60 countries, across five continents and took four years to complete. He had no sponsors, no support team, but just himself, his bike and a few maps.
Alastair’s 46,000-mile journey was heralded by Sir Ranulph Fiennes as “the first great adventure of the new Millennium”. Traveling the length of the Eurasia, Africa and the Americas, Alastair’s story is a breath-taking example of one man’s determination to achieve his goal.

India, canoed down the Yukon river, trekked across Iceland by foot and pack-raft and worked on the Catlin Arctic Survey in the Canadian Arctic. He is currently working towards his next major expedition: an attempt to complete the first unsupported return journey to the South Pole on foot. At 1800-miles this expedition will be the longest polar journey in history.
The National Geographic recently named Alastair as one of their Adventurers of the Year for his 2011 Microadventures project. Alastair developed the concept of a year of small, local trips that began and ended on his doorstep in order to demonstrate that adventure is within everybody’s reach.
