BASS MERCHANT is set for a return to the MI retail circuit in a new Thurrock premises, following the closure of its Colchester store last month.

We hope to have a load of new lines that we didn’t have

A new management team

headed up by Destiny Entertainments has been formed and Chris Chitticks – who ran the Colchester shop alongside Darren MacKay – has been taken on to run the new store. Work has already begun on the new building –

formerly the home of audio retailer Electromarket – with the current plan being to open the doors at the end of January.

Although the Bass

Merchant name has been kept, an audio presence will also be retained in the new

shop in the form of a PA section.

Despite the building

process being still in its early stages at the time MI Pro went to press, director Jas Sapal was confident that the new store would be up and running in the near future.

“We’ve got no set date yet, but the build has been started and so far it’s all going to plan. We’re dealing with all the suppliers at the moment and hope to have a load of new lines in that we didn’t have in the old store,” said Sapal.

“One side will feature a

PA section and the other will be home to all the basses, with a demo room included and it should all be done by the end of the month ( January).”

PLANNING FOR the inaugural National Learn to Play Day on March 31st – organised by the MIA charity Music for All – has taken a step forward, with around 50 shops now taking part.

It’s all kicking off quite nicely and now we have

A number of new organisations have come on board, with the growing list of supporters now including Musicians Union, musicteachers.co.uk and Future Publishing, alongside Roland, Active Music and

Peavey – the suppliers participating so far. The MIA’s chief executive

Paul McManus was pleased with the amount of interest generated so far, but would now like to see stores in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland get involved. “It’s all kicking off quite

nicely and now we have around 50 towns covered, as well as both chains and independents and now we’re looking for people from outside England to join. The website –www.learntoplayday.com – is launching any day now and we’re asking other stores to get in touch sooner rather than later,” said McManus. “All the Dawsons shops

are doing it, so are most of Musicrooms and Digital Village is also sorting out

which stores are going to take part.” All retailers will be

required to complete a checklist to make sure they’re able to host one of the

events, although efforts will be made to seek out an alternative local venue for the smaller dealerships, if required. For more details, or if you’re interested in hosting

one of the Learn to Play Day events at your shop, call the MIA on 01403 800500 or you can email Paul McManus at: paulmc@mia.org.uk.
