COMPANY PROFILE TEAC UK/TASCAM

Recently-appoiinted sales and marketing director Neil Wells reveals how consistent progress in the handheld recorder market has led to impressive sales figures for Tascam…

Year Established: 1953

Number of Employees: Around 3,000 (including manufacturing staff in Japan, China and Indonesia.)

How is business compared to this time last year? Business in the UK is holding up well with an improvement on last year of over 12 per cent. The season was better than expected considering that last year there was the increase in sales for Nov/Dec due to the imminent VAT increase. We are

fortunate not to have had the

same winter weather as last year so far so this has been an advantage.

What are your best selling products at the moment? Handheld recorders are doing exceptionally well with the new DR-40 coming to market, as well as the ground breaking DR- 100MK2, which arrived in December. Portastudios are doing well, as are interface products, which have been bolstered by some new products introduced earlier in 2011. A new area for us is Apple related products like the IX-Z and I-M2.

How important is MI to you compared to other sectors? MI is the most important sector for the TASCAM brand, but the TEAC Corporation has its fingers in many pies. It’s one of the world’s largest computer peripheral manufacturers, as well as a successful home audio brand and also a high- end audio company. TEAC also has a commercial side to its business producing recorders for the aviation business to name just one.

What do you believe gives you the edge over your competitors? TASCAM has the strongest history and reputation of recording products in the MI market. All musicians recognise the brand heritage from the invention of the Portastudio all the way up to today’s latest handheld products. 95 per cent of all our TASCAM products are made in our own factories, so our reliability and quality is second to none.

How do you maintain a good relationship with dealers? Our entire sales team has a retail background so it really understands the needs of our dealers. We recognise that for TASCAM to be

successful, we need to support our dealers with desirable, profitable products that are up to the job.

How does the UK compare to other global MI markets? For Tascam, the UK is our fourth largest market.

What are your aims for the next 12 months? Firstly, to maintain a profitable business supplying desirable, profitable products to our dealers and secondly, to continue to increase the consumer awareness of the brand and its unique position in the MI market.
