Paying Tribute

expanding the tribute memorial wall in 2012

the marines’ memorial Association continues to uphold the promise to remember the men and women who have paid the ulti- mate sacrifice while serving in our Nation’s wars.

In March 2006, the Association constructed the Tribute Memorial Wall — the first known memorial since 9/11 listing all the men and women of the US Armed Forces who have given their lives in Iraq or Afghanistan. When the wall was first assembled on our 10th floor’s mezzanine, it included 2,760 names, with their branch of military service and ranks. Since then, we’ve had to expand the Wall to three other spaces. As of 21 July, we had 6099 names on the wall; we have 162 yet to add. To continue with this vital project, we need your help. Since its creation, the Tribute

Memorial Wall has had many mil- itary and civilian visitors. During the Association’s annual Gold Star Parents Event, the Wall is a special source of consolation and support. Many who have taken time to pay their respects have left comments in the guest book, such as those below:

“I am deeply moved and honored to be in this room! The spirits of those fallen overwhelm me. I shall never forget!” — Colonel (Ret.)

“Thank you for honoring our fallen heroes! Every time we are staying at the Club we come up here to take a moment thinking of our

friends who died.” — Colonel and Wife

“Thank you for honoring and remembering our fallen heroes. Seeing the names of my boys makes me realize that their sacrifice was not in vain.”

“Humbled by the service, the dedica- tion and the honor. The Wall continues a legacy of Americans who dedicate their lives to keep our freedoms.”

“Another

year,

another

visit...

remember that the service and sacrifice of these men and women make it pos- sible for all of us to live in the freedom that allows you to say and believe what you will. To the Marines’ Memorial, thank you from the depths of my heart and soul. Your actions bring hope on a daily basis.” — Gold Star Father

“Thank you for encouraging us to remember.” — LCDR, USN

“Dear Association, thank you for the Memorial Wall. It means more than you know to see Brian’s name remem- bered.” — Gold Star Family

“A wonderful tribute to our troops

who have given the ultimate sacrifice, several of which I had the honor to command. Thank you for keeping their flame bright.” — RADM, USN

Unfortunately, the Tribute Memorial Wall has outgrown the wall space. We need your support to help us finance construction to build an additional free-standing wall so that no name is left off our memorial. This project is expected to cost us more than $150,000. Please make a tax deductible donation to the Marines’ Memo- rial Association to help us continue building the Tribute Memorial Wall. Any donation you make

toward

the Tribute Memorial Wall will go directly to this project, with no funds taken out for overhead.

If you have any questions about the Tribute Memorial Wall or your donation, please call Mackenzie Jakoubek at (415) 673-6672 x215.
