ADM ROBERT F. WILLARD COMMANDER, US PACIFIC COMMAND


Security Opportunities and Challenges in the Asia-Pacific


admiral robert f. willard is the Commander of the US Pacific Command, and on 14 September, he came to San Francisco and spoke on the Security Opportuni- ties and Challenges in the Asia- Pacific in a program co-sponsored by the Marines’ Memorial and the World Affairs Council of Northern California.


His talk was fascinating. Clearly the United States has strategic interests in Asia Pacific. The Admi- ral was definitely well informed on the issues our nation faces in the Pacific. He commands the largest of the geographic Unified Combatant Commands and has an extensive background and experience in his


region. He was Deputy and Chief of Staff for US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He commanded Carrier Group Five aboard USS Kitty Hawk and commanded the US 7th Fleet in Yokosuka, Japan. In May 2007, he assumed com- mand of the US Pacific Fleet; and on October 19, 2009, he became the commander, US Pacific Com- mand, Camp HM Smith, Hawaii. The Admiral is an F-14 avia- tor. He has served in a variety of West Coast fighter squadrons. He was Operations Officer and Executive Officer of Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) and aerial coordinator for the movie


“Top Gun,” which starred Tom Cruise. He later commanded the Screaming Eagles of Fighter Squadron 51. The Admiral served as Executive Officer of USS Carl Vinson, com- manded the amphibious flagship USS Tripoli and commanded the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. From March 2005 to May 2007, Admiral Willard was assigned as the 34th Vice Chief of Naval Operations.

Tyson, the President and Chief Operating Officer of Kaiser Perma- nente, to speak here at the Club. Kaiser Permanente is America’s largest nonprofit health plan and health care delivery system. Bernard Tyson has spent his entire adult life working for Kai-


ser Permanente, playing a key role in making Kaiser the recognized model for affordable health care of the future. The program was co- sponsored by the Commonwealth Club of California, the nation’s old- est and largest public affairs forum. Mr. Tyson shared his extensive knowledge on the issues affecting the access, cost, and quality of health care in the United States. Building on his 30-year career in health care leadership, Tyson also


provided his perspective on the work that Kaiser Permanente is currently undertaking to serve as a model for the health care industry. We had a large and very curious audience and Tyson kept them on the edge of their seats, revealing a fasci- nating array of statistics about health care here in the US and globally.
