Scholarship Aids a Future Teacher Dear Mackenzie,

I want to personally and profoundly thank the Marines’ Memorial Association for the scholarship your educational fund awarded my granddaughter, Sarah Blaha. She is now enrolled in University of Mis- souri. She wants to teach high school English. Being a PFC Veteran of the USMC 1946-48 in China and Guam, the Corps is very dear to me and the scholar- ship program makes me even more proud. Semper Fi,

Wayne Christenson

Extraordinary Service Nets Three-Day Stay Dear Michael Allen and Bethany Meyer, Shortly following the termination of my active duty in 1974, we became Life Members of the MMC. Recent- ly, we were to attend a meeting at the Grand Hyatt (with sky high room rates). We contacted MMC but found it fully booked. On a follow up call a few days later, Yolanda at the front desk encouraged us to keep trying, even suggesting more likely times of the day we might be successful. Through multiple calls, we reserved rooms for two of the three nights we needed. On the Friday before our trip, we received a personal call from Yolanda stating a room had opened for that third night. She wanted to call us personally as she was off that weekend.

On arrival, we had a chance to personally meet Yolanda. She was even able to secure an upgrade and package plan to suit our needs. Our 3-day stay was wonderful. The breakfasts were great, we met new friends at the Happy Hour and even had a chance to meet General Myatt walking his dogs.

We would like to nominate Yolanda for Employee

of the Month (or Year). She is professional, friendly, courteous, knowledgeable, encouraging, has a great smile and clearly goes out of her way to make MMC members happy. She embodies all of what your employees should strive for. She is a “10” and we wish to recognize her as such. Sincerely yours,

Dr. Thomas and Ursula Tangeman, LCDR (USNR)

Crossroads’ Influence on Members’ Menu Dear Editor,

My husband, John Bonnett, USN, receives your pub- lication. We have enjoyed many of the recipes you print in your magazine. Recently, there was a recipe for Cranberry Chutney which sounded so good and I wanted to make it for the upcoming holiday. How- ever, even though I thought I had clipped it from the magazine, I seem to have misplaced it. Would it be possible for you to email me that recipe? I would so appreciate it.

My husband has enjoyed his many visits to your Club and continues to enjoy your publication. W.L. Bonnett

Editor’s note: We forwarded the recipe to Mrs. Bon- nett and hope all of our Members continue to enjoy Chef Paul’s special recipes. Bon appétit!

In Memoriam

Vallejo Police Officer James Capoot was shot and killed in the line of duty on 17 November while pur- suing a bank robber. Jim Capoot was a proud Marine, dedicated husband and father to three lovely daugh- ters, role model to dozens of kids and coach and father figure to the Vallejo Girls Champion Basketball team. A celebration of Officer Capoot’s life was held on the football field at Vallejo High School on 30 November with more than 4,000 fellow law enforcement officers, friends and family attending. Jim Capoot was the best of the best whose life was cut short at the age of 45. He will be missed by an entire city and county.

Joseph Rogers was a Marine who served on Iwo Jima as an artillery forward observer. Joe lasted in that battle for thirteen days before he was wounded and evacuated. Joe spent nearly a year in the hospital recovering from his wounds and then returned to California and attended Stanford Law School. Joe practiced and taught law for nearly 60 years. Among the many honors Joe earned was being named Califor- nia Trial Lawyer of the year in 1980. Joe served on the Marines’ Memorial Association Board of Directors for three years and was a staunch supporter of the Club. We will miss him.
