Marine Veteran Steve Snyder to Serve as Board Chairman
the mma board of directors elected Marine Veteran Stephen M. Snyder as Chairman for calen- dar year 2012. Mr. Snyder served as Vice Chairman of the Board last year. He served as a Marine infantry officer for three years, including a combat tour in Vietnam with 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. Following his Marine Corps service, he attend- ed Cornell University, earning a law degree. Since 1972, Mr. Snyder has practiced law in San Francisco, except for two years when he taught law at Northwestern University in Chicago. He has served on several boards, including the San Francisco Bar Association; the San Francisco Embarcadero YMCA, where he was also Board Chair; Swords to Plow- shares; and a prior tour on the Marines’ Memorial where he served as Vice Chair. He was a founding director of the Danny Foundation (a non-profit advocating for nursery product safety) and a trustee of the Dominican School of Philoso- phy and Theology of the Graduate Theological Union. He and his wife, Faye, live in Lafayette, CA. Mr. Snyder replaces MajGen Matt Caulfield USMC (Ret.), who leaves the Board after four years of service. Gen Caulfield’s contribu- tions to the Marines’ Memorial Association, and to Veterans in par- ticular, were numerous. The Board also brought Gen Joseph P. Hoar USMC (Ret.) back on the Board and elected him Vice Chairman. Gen Hoar served as Chairman of the MMA Board in 2009 and 2010. He retired from the
US Marine Corps after 37 years of service. During his last three years of active service, he was the Com- mander in Chief, US Central Com- mand—the unified command that has the planning and operational responsibilities for 19 countries of the Middle East, South Asia, and the Horn of Africa. Since retiring, Gen Hoar has formed a consulting firm that is engaged in business development in the Middle East and Africa. He is a member of the Board of Directors of several non- profit organizations.
Elected as Secretary of the Board
is Marine Veteran Ian Thomson. Ian graduated from Boston Uni- versity and was commissioned a Marine 2nd Lieutenant through the NROTC program. He served with 1st Combat Engineers in the march up to Baghdad in 2003. After leav- ing active duty, Ian earned his MBA in Barcelona, Spain and currently works
for Booz Allen Hamilton, specializing in clean technologies. In recognition of their significant contribution to the Association, the Board elected for a fourth year of Board service the first Navy and Army Directors, CAPT L. Irving Williams USN (Ret.) and BG Frank Partlow USA (Ret.). Joining Gen Caulfield in depart- ing the Board after serving their terms are Mr. Pete Paffrath, who served as Secretary of the Board this past year; Mr. Jim Sullivan, who was Chairman of the Finance and Facilities Committee; Mr. Quang Pham, Chairman of the Member- ship Committee; SgtMaj Doug
Barr, USMC (Ret.) Chairman of the Nominating Committee; and Mr. Hugh Scott.
In addition to Gen Hoar, we will have five new Directors in 2012. LtGen Robert Johnston USMC
(Ret.) served 36 years on active duty. He was Operations Officer for US CENTCOM during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Subsequently, he commanded I Marine Expeditionary Force in the combat operations in Somalia in 1992/1993. He served as Deputy Commandant
for Manpower and
Reserve Affairs prior to his retirement. He lives in Tuc- son, AZ, where he is active in Veterans’ affairs. Eddie LeBaron was an all-American quarterback for University of the Pacific. As a Marine infantry pla- toon commander, he fought in the Korean War, being wounded twice, and then was an NFL quarterback for 12 years. He was named all-pro four times while playing with the Washington Redskins and then the Dallas Cowboys. Gunnar Counselman was commissioned a Marine 2nd Lieutenant out of Cornell and served in Iraq and the Horn of Africa before leaving the Corps to attend Harvard Business School. Upon graduation, he worked for Bain and Company. Recently, he founded Fidelis, Inc., a transition college for the military. Eric Schroeder served six years in the Corps, leaving
as a Sergeant. He earned a B.S. degree at Azusa Pacific University and is currently Senior Vice President at Heffernan Insurance Brokers.
SgtMaj Frank Pulley, USMC (Ret.) was the Ser-
geant Major of the 1st Marine Division when he retired in 2007, after serving 30 years in the Corps. He serves as the Marine Corps Association’s West Coast Area Repre- sentative and is a member of the Secretary of the Navy’s Retiree Council. He has a B.S. Degree in Management/ Human Resources and an A.S. Degree in Personnel Management.
