BoatShop’s Historic Thunderbird Sailboat #2 Receives Grant Completion Certificate
On Wednesday, October 26,
the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation presented the Gig Harbor BoatShop Board with a certificate signifying the successful stabilization of Thunderbird Sailboat #2. Pat Lantz, a member of the Washington Trust Board of Directors, was on hand to thank the Gig Harbor BoatShop for carrying on the maritime legacy of Gig Harbor and for successfully completing their grant
project. Through the Washington Trust’s Valerie Sivinski WA Preserves Fund, the Gig Harbor BoatShop received a $1,000 grant toward the restoration of the plywood hull of the vessel. On December 15 and 16, in the Eddon Boatyard loft, a group of volunteers will begin refinishing the boat’s mast and boom. “We are hoping, if things go according to plan, to launch her in the spring sometime – and that will be a huge event,” said Storkman.” Built in the same Eddon Boatyard
shop over a half a century ago, Thunderbird #2 named ‘Pirouette,’ was first launched in 1958. After launching, Thunderbird #2 will be used to get the community out on the water sailing. “We are in the process of developing a programming and funding plan to make that happen,” said Gig Harbor BoatShop president Guy Hoppen.
