Letters Skippers, the point is to get people out on the water.

The more people we get out there, the better the sailing business is for all of the sport. If you’ve got a space … take a chance on a new guy. You might find a great regular addition to your boat if you’re building a program, or just pick up a spare set of hands if your regular crew is caught in some unforeseeable situation. We have all been on both sides of this equation so make a point to exit the North breakwater and keep an eye out at the end of X dock, ready to pull over. Remember, the circle is only a formality. Find your way to the end of “X” dock. There are no guarantees here, but hopefully, it will make finding and filling boats a little easier and open doors for a lot more fun! A special thank you to our friends at the Port of Seattle: Giuseppe Alvarado, Manager of Business & Operations & Harbor Services, Tracy McKendry, General Manager & their crew. It is once again inspiring to see the Port of Seattle & Shilshole Bay Marina fully supporting the sailing community.

This is truly one of those ideas where everyone goes, “Why

didn’t we do this years ago?” We’re always getting inquiries from newbies wanting advice on how to get into sailing/racing, and the advice was always just to basically walk the docks and the club before the races. Now we can send them to “X” dock which will hopefully result in a ride. Great work!

Whale Trivia Erroneous

On page 21, Maritime Trivia, in the 48° North, November 2011 issue, it states, “Whales have two blowholes, while dolphins only have one.” This is seriously incorrect. The following is from the “Guide to Marine Mammals of the World,” by the National Audubon Society: Cetaceans: Suborder Odontoceti (Toothed whales) Sperm Whales: Sperm, Pygmy and Dwarf Sperm Beaked Whales: At least 20 species

River Dolphinsm Monodontids (Beluga and Narwhals) Ocean Dolphins Porpoises

All have ONE blowhole.

Suborder Mysticeti (Baleen Whales) Blue, Fin, Sei, Hmpback, Minke, gray, Bryde’s, Bowhead, Right, Pygmy Right whales. All have TWO blow holes.
