ETHNIC LANDSCAPE
Vancouver is home to 185,000 people (71 percent of all immigrants) from Asia or the Middle East, 47,000 (18 percent) from Europe and 6,000 (2.3 percent) from Africa. More than 25 percent (143,000) of the city claims a Chinese language (Chinese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese) as their mother tongue.
CULTURE
Vancouver is eclectic. Skiers, vacationers, luxury cruisers meet bohemians and businessmen all mixing in a hundred languages and nationalities. It’s an urbanite’s paradise not too far from wild mountains and open sea.
BURNABY
POPULATION: 203,000
CULTURE
Burnaby draws the world’s elite because of Simon Fraser University, but it also serves as a bedroom community for people working in downtown.
ETHNIC LANDSCAPE
The third largest municipality in the province, about 70 percent of the 102,000 immigrants in Burnaby are from Asia or the Middle East, 19 percent are from Europe and 4.5 percent are from Africa. More than 100,000 first-generation immigrants over the age of 15 live in Burnaby.
RICHMOND
POPULATION: 185,400
ETHNIC LANDSCAPE
Immigrants account for 57 percent of Richmond’s population, giving it the highest proportion of immigrants of any municipality in Canada; 82 percent of its immigrants come from Asia or the Middle East, 10.9 percent from Europe and 2.3 percent from Africa.
CULTURE
Only 25 minutes from downtown, Richmond is a quickly-growing city with a mixture of urban, suburban and rural areas. Known for its Chinese community and most recently as home to 2010 Winter Olympic events.
SURREY
POPULATION: 395,000
ETHNIC LANDSCAPE
Of 150,000 immigrants in Surrey, 100,000 came from Asia or the Middle East; 27,000 from Europe; 10,000 from Oceania (Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia); 4,000 from Africa. Nearly 30,000 immigrants arrived in Surrey within the last 10 years.
CULTURE
The last stop on the Skytrain, Surrey is urban but less decadent than downtown. The area is somewhat known for its Indian population, some 53,000 strong, and for its lower-cost housing.
PITT MEADOWS
POPULATION: 20,000
ETHNIC LANDSCAPE
A majority of the population of Pitt Meadows was born in British Columbia and of the 3,240 immigrants 47 percent are European and 40 percent Chinese.
CULTURE
Only 45 minutes east of downtown, Pitt Meadows is picturesque, almost pastoral. It is a destination for fishermen and hikers and for Vancouverites looking for a nice community to raise a family.
