It’s probably fair to say that reliable, appropriate, efficient and familiar aren’t the most glamorous words in the English language. But if you’re looking to maintain or expand a post production business in these austerity times, they are very much the kinds of attributes you need. And they’re exactly the attributes five of the UK’s biggest post houses saw in Avid and its technology when they were deciding what kit to include in their expansion or upgrade plans during 2011. Soho’s Envy, for one, has gone very big on Avid this summer as part of a £2m investment that saw its new offline facility Holden House on Rathbone Place open its doors, providing 25 operational areas over 10,000 sq ft. Amongst that number were Media Composer Mojo DX v5.5 systems – running on HP Z800 workstations – and Avid Symphonies. Two 64TB Avid ISIS 5000 storage systems were also installed with plans for another Pro Tools-based 5.1 dubbing studio. Facility director Natascha Cadle says client demand was a crucial ingredient in the expansion: “It’s not the most exotic reason but there was a clear business opportunity to take advantage of this demand,” she says candidly.

“We traditionally have grown organically and this really seems to work for us. It’s important we can accommodate our clients and they wanted more quality rooms in a nice environment.” She adds that Avid has been Envy’s editing system of choice for multiple-room projects since the company launched back in 2006. “Our clients love it,” she says. “Everything just works which is essential in what is always a competitive market. Sumners is another facility that’s putting Avid technology at the heart of its expansion plans, but the emphasis in this case is on audio and shared storage. The Manchester- based post house is nearing completion on the initial phase of its planned relocation to the new MediaCityUK development in nearby Salford Quays where the BBC and ITV are re-locating 1,000s of jobs and various channels and departments. Located inside the University of Salford’s media, music and performance school, the first phase of the new Sumners operation will offer high-quality finishing services and also provide the university’s students with master class tuition and the chance to finish their own projects on professional high-end tools.
