Avid has released a completely rebuilt version of its editing staple Media Composer, centred on a new open 64-bit architecture designed to bolster performance and flexibility. Media Composer 6 has been given a new user interface, which preserves the functionality of the software while speeding up workflows. Added to this, Avid’s AMA plug-in architecture has been expanded to offer native support for AVCHD and Red Epic and the ability to encode Apple ProRes. A newly introduced Avid Open I/O function provides support for popular video and audio cards from AJA, Blackmagic Design, Bluefish444, Matrox and MOTU.

Media Composer 6 now has enhanced integration with Pro Tools, 5.1/7.1 surround sound and extensive metadata management, which enables more session data to be shared between Media Composer and Pro Tools. Editors can also export metadata into finishing systems for grading and high-end effects. Finally, Media Composer 6 has improved stereo 3d tools for full-res, real-time editing, mixed eye workflows. The software is available now and costs from $2,499 (£1,560). Upgrades cost from $299 (£190).

A revamped Pro Tools hardware and software platform promises to make it possible for customers to mix bigger, better and more complex productions. The Pro Tools|HDX digital audio workstation is the new flagship DSP- accelerated Pro Tools system for consistent peak performance and near-zero latency, ideal for handling extremely large and complex productions. It boosts the processing power of previous generation cards by up to five times and is able to work with up to 64 channels of I/O per card, enabling larger configurations with fewer cards. It also has dramatically improved recording and mixing audio quality with over 1,000 dB additional headroom and higher resolution sound, thanks to a new floating point architecture. A complete Pro Tools|HDX system, which includes the new Pro Tools 10 software, starts at £6,299 with various cross-grade discounts for existing Pro Tools|HD owners. The software portion of the audio workstation also contains several new features, such as the inclusion of Clip Gain, which separates out pre- mix levels from Pro Tools software’s mixing automation. This speeds up and improves the workflow between sound editors and mixers. Customers will also be able to experience better performance, even on network-attached or slow local drives, with disk handling improvements and real-time fades. Furthermore, the ability to record, edit and mix in higher resolution with 32-bit floating-point file format is supported. Pro Tools 10 software is available now and costs £499. Pro Tools 9 owners can upgrade to v10 for £199.
