TIM MYNETT Training partner program manager for EMEA, AVID
Avid’s Learning Partner program is for independent training companies, corporations, universities and other educational institutions providing training on Avid products. Tim Mynett is the training partner program manager for EMEA, and at the moment, looks after 132 authorised Avid Learning Partners across the EMEA region. In the UK alone, Mynett currently oversees 55 learning partners delivering Avid certifications and courseware. The curriculum is very scalable, delivered by a mixture of colleges and universities, where students can take up to three-year courses for professional certification, or short workplace based courses from facility-based training companies. Mynett reckons that 25-30 percent of the UK partners are industry based training facilities, companies such as the recent addition to the programme, Soho Editors. This London-based training company is at the forefront of the post production training industry in the UK and Europe, with a reputation of delivering high-quality professional training programs for several major industry manufacturers. “Soho Editors have been delivering Avid courses for several years – and it’s great to get the recognition that comes with becoming Avid Authorised,” says Brian Cantwell, md, Soho Editors.

Soho Editors’ proven background in high-quality training is one of the key requirements for a training partner: “Quite a few of the partners have a combination of a post production focus for part of their business and a training focus for another part of their business,” explains Mynett. For example, Jim Allison of M8media, which has also recently become an Avid Learning Partner, has “great facilities up in Glasgow in terms of his colour grading, viewing rooms and his studio, as well as strong local knowledge,” says Mynett. “And of course he has great industry experience. That combination really works for us.” “It’s more relevant on the professional side than the academic side, but what we look for is someone who has an established training business, with experience in training for production, whether that’s long-form, short- form or flexible class delivery,” explains Mynett. “We like to ensure that they have been using our products for a period of time, because you can’t just ‘teach’ our products unless you’ve had experience of them yourself. They also generally have passion for using our equipment, a passion for using Pro Tools or Media Composer, but also a drive to help their students gain employability at the end of whichever course they’re teaching.” Mynett’s team provides an instructor training programme that helps bring the trainers up to speed with the Avid curriculum, to fill in any knowledge gaps. Every time Avid brings out a major product release there’s always a change in the curriculum, so these knowledge gaps need to be addressed swiftly. “Obviously we know what’s coming, so within a 30-day timeframe we’ll have set up all the certification classes for our instructors,” says Mynett. “A lot of the time these classes take place online, rather than in a physical location.”

Mynett’s team also get a lot of feedback from instructors about how the curriculum is being delivered. The feedback instructors provide helps identify errors and aids better positioning of modules and exercises. “The curriculum is an organic thing,” says Mynett. “It’s always going to change.” It helps that Mynett and his team are very motivated.
“We love the products,” he says. “I’m a big fan of Pro Tools and Media Composer and the people here are very similar to me. I suppose that’s one of the things that drives me. I’m a big fan of imparting knowledge to people.”
