Front of house engineer Chris Madden was one of the first users of Avid’s VENUE system. Here he tells us why it’s his system of choice

Over a long and illustrious career as a front of house engineer Chris Madden has worked with a very diverse range of successful artists, perfecting the sound of their live shows and transfering the sparkle of the studio to the live arena. Artists that have benefited from Madden’s expert touch include Gabrielle, Sugababes, Pink, Joe Cocker, The La’s and Sade, with whom he is currently on a very successful tour. “I’ve been pretty fortunate, really,” he says looking back over his career. “The Pink tour was really good as is the current Sade tour. Joe Cocker was fantastic – right up my street – and I did The Waterboys for a long time. There’s an absolute magic to them.” Chris has seen and heard it all when it comes to front of house duties. He was raised on analogue consoles but embraced digital systems when they appeared and was one of the first adopters of Avid’s VENUE system. “It was early, back in 2005, that I started using it,” he

I had a look at it and it made sense to me straight away. But it was far more advanced than anything else I had seen in a live environment at the time. I liked the layout of it and the expanded channel view, or ‘shared panel’ as I call it. Basically you select a channel and you get every function of that channel on one single expanded view. I like that way of working.” So what is the best feature of the desk? It was something that grabbed Chris’ attention straight away: “First and foremost, it’s the sound of VENUE,” Chris explains. “I wouldn’t entertain using a system like it if it didn’t sound good and I couldn’t get the results I wanted. The reliability and the support are there too – both of those go together. If I ever have a problem, which really doesn’t happen very often, the support from Avid is fantastic. And when you are in the back end of nowhere, which I sometimes am, that is very important – feeling that safety net underneath me all the time is vital.” Chris might have been brought up with analogue desks but he’s certainly embraced the advantages of digital systems and has been quick to make the most of VENUE’s big features in this regard. “In terms of the whole digital console concept,” Chris says, “the advantage is that I
