as it comes to a stop, preparing the bus, coming to a complete stop and “looking and listening” for trains in both directions. “Te Safety Route Re- minder reviews steps drivers need to take before crossing railroad tracks,” said Helen Sramek, president of Operation Lifesaver. “School buses must open the door and stop prior to the crossing—to give a good view down the tracks. Other vehicle drivers are reminded to stop when behind a school bus at a railroad crossing. Tese actions will help keep our stu- dents safe.” One of the most deadly school bus–train collisions in the nation’s

history occurred in Fox River Grove, Ill., in October 1995, killing seven stu- dents. Te most recent such collision occurred in Conasaugua, Tenn., in 2000. Two students were killed and five were injured along with the school bus driver.

mously to outfit the entire school bus fleet with lap and shoulder bets after more than 800 Waltham residents signed a petition requesting that new language in the district’s Request for Bids contract include the requirement to equip buses with lap and shoulder belts — increasing its transportation budget by just 3 percent. Il- linois Central School Bus, which was awarded the transportation contract, selected IMMI to install SafeGuard seats on its Tomas Built school buses and to train school personnel, students and drivers. “Because our SafeGuard seating provides

both compartmentalization and lap-shoulder protection, we’re confident that we’ll be able to satisfy Waltham’s interest in safety for belted bus passengers,” said Charlie Vits, IMMI’s market development manager of sales.
