WORTMANN increases sales by 15.1 % - Record turnover of 957.7 million Euros in the past financial year

The Wortmann Group, based in

Detmold, Germany, has announced its final figures for the past financial year 2010/11 (ending 31 May). Group turnover rose by 15.1 % to 957.7 million Euros (GBP 816.3 million). In the previous year, total turnover amounted to 832.1 million Euros. With a record rise of over 125 million Euros, the business group achieved the highest growth rate in the company's history. Wortmann marked this

achievement by paying its employees an additional month's salary as a special bonus. The export ratio of 52.7 % rose slightly in comparison with the previous year (51.8 %). Nearly all export markets are moving towards double digit growth rates. Wortmann recorded the strongest growth rates in Russia, the Benelux

countries and France. Turnover outside Europe is also on course for success with single digit growth rates for Novi Footwear Far East Ltd in Hong Kong/Singapore. Shoes produced by the Wortmann Group are sold in over 15,000 shoe shops and in over 70 countries worldwide. Tamaris, which has received a number of different marketing awards, has now become the top brand in the Wortmann Group and is moving forward with its franchise concept. There are currently 519 active Tamaris franchises (compared with 359 last year), of which 164 are mono-label stores and 355 are shop-in-shops. This represents an increase of around 45 %. In addition, a further 19 stores and 26 shop-in-shops are planned and are already under contract. Approximately 35 % of retail

Deichmann UK marks 10th anniversary with the opening of its second flagship store

German shoe retailer Deichmann, which has more than 3,000 stores in

Europe and the US and sells shoes at a starting price of £9.99, will mark its 10th UK anniversary with the opening of a second flagship store at Westfield Stratford City. The Group also confirmed plans to open an additional 10 stores before the end of the year, taking its UK footprint up to 60 outlets. The company continues to believe that the UK could see up to 400 Deichmann outlets, with a focus on the largest 200 towns and cities, opening up in the long-run. The new Westfield outlet – the fourth UK store that the retailer has opened with the shopping centre company – will be 7,500 square feet. During 2011 the shoe giant expects to invest approximately £4 million on

UK store development and redevelopment and to create 200 new jobs. Deichmann is the market leader of shoe retailers in Europe. Deichmann

will also use its UK anniversary to launch its eStore – effectively giving it a national presence and acknowledging the major shift in consumer shopping behaviour since it opened its first high street outlet in the UK a decade ago. In the past year it has sold more than 152 million pairs of shoes (10%

more than in 2009) in markets stretching from Turkey to the US. Over half (55%) of the company’s turnover comes from outside of Germany. Traditionally, a British shoe retailer would want each of its outlets to be approximately 1,500 square feet, but Deichmann’s rack room (i.e. self- service) presentation requires greater floorspace (between 3,500-5,000 square feet), allowing customers to look for their own shoes and size instead of relying on a shop assistant to find them another style, size or colour. The shoes are presented in their original boxes, sorted by brands and ready to try on. Rack room presentation was imported into Europe in the 1980s by Deichmann and has since been replicated by many competitors including Brantano in the UK.

outlets are currently operated outside Germany. With a marketing budget in the double digit million range, Tamaris is the largest of all European shoe manufacturers. From the autumn / winter 2011 season there will also be the first collection of licensed Tamaris products in the fashion, jewellery and watch segment. The new collections will initially be launched as a mail order operation. With a shoe sales volume of 29.8 million pairs in the fashion sector and 34.1 million pairs in the standard range, the Wortmann Group ranks as the largest manufacturer, distributor and retailer of footwear in Europe. European brands which are part of the group include Tamaris, Marco Tozzi, Caprice, Jana and s.Oliver Shoes, as well as Novi Footwear in Asia. Wortmann has its own

companies in nine locations in Europe and a further eleven companies in the Far East. Internationally, the company currently has 978 employees (compared with 868 last year), of which 549 are in Europe. Worldwide, a workforce of over 30,000 is involved in manufacturing for the Detmold based Wortmann Group. For the first half year of the

current business year 2011/2012 (autumn / winter season 2011/12), Wortmann again expects a double digit growth rate. Furthermore, the spring / summer collection 2012 has been on sale since July of this year. According to the first available figures, there is a feeling of confidence in Detmold that in 2012 the company will again be able to continue the success story of the preceding years.
