GDS REVIEW

GDS F

International Event for Shoes & Accessories GLOBAL SHOES – leading trade show for sourcing 7 to 9 September 2011

rom 7 to 9 September 2011 a total of 1,290 exhibitors presented trends for the 2012 Spring/Summer season at the Düsseldorf shoe trade fairs GDS – International Event for

Shoes & Accessories and GLOBAL SHOES. At GDS the new trends were presented by 9%

more exhibitors than at the previous year’s event. These included such brands as Geox, Farrutx, Fratelli Rossetti and Salamander that returned to GDS. In addition to these, small labels such as John Varvatos (USA), John Fluevog (Canada), Heschung (France), Kat Maconie (UK), Fonnesberg (Denmark) and Halmanera (Italy) celebrated their debut in Düsseldorf. According to the show organisers, 36% of all

retailers were looking for new suppliers at the trade fair. 25% were interested in new products to round off their ranges. Half of the just under 24,000 trade visitors were guests from abroad. All in all, visitors from 77 different countries travelled to Düsseldorf. However, the current economic insecurity in the Eurozone countries was reflected by a decline in visitor numbers by some 4% against March 2011. Kirstin Deutelmoser, Director GDS and Global

Shoes, said: “We registered increased visitors’ interest from some Eastern European countries, such as Poland which has become the most important export market for German footwear manufacturers now.

Furthermore, market research has confirmed that the interest taken by visitors over the past few months is more wide-ranging than it used to be and that our themed segments went down very well. We are also very satisfied with the developments at Global Shoes.” The high international spread of GDS visitors

was also positively rated by exhibitors such as by Andreas Schaller, CEO at Lloyd: "We primarily use GDS to meet with international retailers. And they came to our stand this time – as did all national key accounts, which is why we are so satisfied with the trade fair.” International visitors included Charles Clinkard

and Sanbalwood from the UK as well as Carmi, Maniet and Paris Londres from Belgium. Bianca Sapatos, Leonel & Coutinho and Marques Soares travelled to Düsseldorf from Portugal. Also on site: Nilsson from Sweden, Up a tree from Denmark, Printemps from France, Calzados Bravo from Spain, Axa Shoes and GUM from Russia. Likewise, numerous famous German retail firms were represented such as Apropos, Burresi, Görtz, Kaufhof, Leiser and Werdich, to name but a few.

Portuguese Innovation Awards The highlight was the presentation of the

Portuguese Innovation Awards honouring young talents for outstanding achievements. The winners were Ruben Avelar of Bottier (Prestige Award), Silvia Marinho of Telyon (Children Shoe Award), Rita Melo of XUZ (Revelation Award), Antonio and Manio Manoles of Cubanas (Lady Shoes Award), José Afonso of Eugénia Tavares (Young Talent Award) and Andre Fernandes of Cohibas (Men Shoes Award).

Satisfied exhibitors at Global Shoes According to the organisers, the 440 exhibitors

at Global Shoes were delighted by the increased interest taken in children’s shoes. These – alongside the traditionally strong women’s and men’s shoes – were the winners of the three trade fair days. Demand was high from international buyers – as Bambang Kartono, Deputy Director for Shoes and Leather of the Indonesian Ministry for Industry, confirms: “Global Shoes is the gateway to Europe for exhibitors from Indonesia. The international flair is impressive. You meet buyers here that you would not encounter at any other trade fair. Early in the morning of the first day of the fair a dealer from New York already placed a large order with us. And the next minute you make contacts with people from Africa – this is exactly what our exhibitors are hoping for. Many have already decided to participate in the forthcoming Global Shoes again at this early stage."

What the visitors and exhibitors said: "GDS went ever so well for us. With our own

fashion show "The Spirit of Clarks" we succeeded in familiarising our customers not only with the products but also with our brand. Attendance was fantastic including many international guests. Furthermore, we leveraged GDS to launch our new franchise concept, which went down very well.” Richard Squire, Int. Marketing Manager

“The British Footwear Association capitalises on

GDS to introduce to the German market new emerging Brit brands. We seek to make contact between the brands and distributors or agents. In some cases we had very concrete conversations, which was not least due to the good stand location assigned to us by GDS – the support was excellent." Nicholas Parry-Billings, Sales & Marketing Director

, British F ootwear Association

The next GDS / GLOBAL SHOES trade fairs will take place from 14 to 16 March 2012 and from 5 to 7 September 2012.
