Swets has bought Accucoms. The provider of sales and marketing services to academic and professional publishers will remain an independent entity under Swets’ umbrella. ‘The healthy reputation Accucoms has established as a trusted partner for publishers, helped to solidify our decision


to acquire the business,’ said David Main, CEO of Swets. ‘Bringing Accucoms under the wing of Swets will enable us to broaden the scope of our services to publishers dramatically, as well as empowering and building upon the rewarding work that Accucoms is renowned for.’


Pinar Erzin will continue to manage Accucoms and Egon Menardi will drive its commercial expansion as sales director.


This is not the fi rst time that the two companies’ histories have overlapped. In 2005 Accucoms bought Extenza Marketing Services from Swets.


IOP Publishing starts article evolution programme


IOP Publishing (IOP) has started its article evolution programme. This new project is designed to improve the online delivery of research articles, which IOP says should enable readers to interact with research in new ways. The fi rst online release from the project provides an enhanced HTML view for all new published articles in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical and Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. Dutch universities select Ex Libris tools Leiden University, Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam, or UvA), and Hogeschool van Amsterdam (the University of Applied Sciences, or HvA) have selected a cloud-based installation of the Primo discovery and delivery solution from Ex Libris. This includes the Primo Central Index of scholarly electronic resources.


In addition to adopting the cloud-based Primo Direct service, the universities are moving their


implementations of MetaLib and SFX to the Ex Libris cloud environment.


Asbury Theological Seminary chooses discovery service from EBSCO Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, USA has picked EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) as its discovery service. The seminary was looking for a way to merge the research experiences of both novice and advanced users, according to EBSCO.


BioMed Central brings open-access initiative to West African university Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) of


Kumasi, Ghana, is the fi rst African Foundation Member to participate in ‘Open Access Africa’. This free scheme recently launched by BioMed Central is a collection of initiatives designed to increase the output and visibility of scientifi c research published by African learning institutes.


Brown University Library adopts Summon Discovery Service Brown University Library, USA, is adopting the Summon web- scale discovery service from Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest to improve the discoverability and usability of library electronic resources for its students, faculty and staff.

to improve the appearance of an article and increase the potential ways the reader can interact with research online, such as the ability to zoom in and out of images, making it easier to look at complex details and structures and export them into presentations. Video abstracts are now embedded within the enhanced HTML article. The option to view mathematics using MathJax technology (see page 24) has also been made available for the fi rst time on IOPscience.


In order to make these changes possible IOP has invested in MarkLogic technology. This is expected to enable future developments and responses to customer feedback to be rolled out quickly, making it easier for IOP to respond to customer feedback on the article evolution project.


All other IOP-owned and selected partner journals will adopt the new enhanced article view and features for their 2012 volumes.


SPIE chooses Silverchair platform


SPIE has selected Silverchair Information Systems to host the SPIE Digital Library on its SCM6 platform from June 2012. ‘We chose Silverchair as a strategic partner largely because its strong semantic capabilities will enable the SPIE Digital Library to be a truly integrated information portal,’ said Eric Pepper, SPIE director of publications. ‘In addition to supporting essential publishing and usage functionality, SCM6 will enable us to draw connections between topically related information across the SPIE corpus, link to valuable content from other sources of interest to the researchers who use our database, and facilitate user personalisation.’
