12-13 14 15 10 YEARS OF RESEARCH INFORMATION Leader: Siân Harris A decade of change
Ten years ago, the team behind our sister magazine Scientifi c Computing World responded to the growing trend in using computers not just for scientifi c research but also for fi nding the information published from research. The result was Research Information. Topics in our fi rst issue, published in Autumn 2001, included the role of XML in scholarly publishing, tools for fi nding information online and discussions about free access to published research.
Those topics are still current
today but in many ways the scholarly publishing industry has also moved on hugely. There was no mention in our fi rst issue of Twitter, open APIs or semantic searching. In this issue we give you a fl avour of some of the many hot topics in the industry over the past decade, how they’ve evolved and what might happen next.
Look out for more hot topics next issue and also when we speak at the Frankfurt Book Fair and Online Information over the coming months.
