health & safety news l Safety first for BT

A Birmingham-based manufacturer of materials handling equipment is helping telecommunications giant BT to fulfil a commitment to ongoing investment in the latest computer technology.

The BT group needed specialist equipment to install new servers and turned to Wilmat for help with developing a bespoke solution. To utilise space, the servers are housed together in a blade chassis which then slides into a cabinet. The combined weight of a blade chassis is upwards of 100kg and having the right handling

equipment is necessary to install and remove the servers as and when required.

Wilmat supplied three platform plate lifting trucks that will help BT stay at the forefront of technological advances

ATEX advice service launched

TÜV SÜD Product Service, an international expert in product safety testing, has launched a new service that will reassure transport and warehouse operators that they comply with the European ATEX Workplace Directive. ATEX Safety Service will also ensure that their workers are safe from a potentially explosive atmosphere, particularly caused by tankers that hold hazardous products and atmospheric dust. Jean-Louis Evans, managing director of TÜV SÜD Product Service, said, “The ‘explosion directive’ has far reaching consequences for transport and warehouse operators. Explosive atmospheres include apparently benign industries such as waste recycling and food processing, not just more obvious ones such as oil & gas or chemicals. The legal repercussions are significant if the companies transporting such goods get this wrong and a service such as ours provides a simple route to ensure that

they get it right.”

TÜV SÜD’s new ATEX Safety Service will support operators to interpret and comply with regulations and reduce the risk to their workers. Comprehensive site safety reviews include the identification of possible ignition sources, equipment inspection, as well as practical control and mitigation techniques. The service will also assure

manufacturers of machinery for use in potentially explosive environments that their equipment complies with the European Directive ATEX 95 – 94/9/EC and will operate safely.

As a Notified Body, TÜV SÜD can offer machinery manufacturers product certification of both electrical and non- electrical equipment under the ATEX Product Directive. This will reduce time to market for new products and ensure that existing ones can continue to be sold legally.

by making the transportation and installation of the new generation servers an everyday task that can be completed safely and swiftly.

Steve Gauge, technical specialist at BT’s Oswestry Data Centre, explained: “We needed a manual handling truck which would enable the operator to lift and manoeuvre the equipment in a safe and responsible way. The truck is also required to provide a solid foundation for the precise installation of the blade chassis."

A major reason that Wilmat won the contract was its ability to provide a reliable solution that keeps downtime and maintenance to an absolute minimum.

“Being able to do a job first time and as efficiently as possible is very important to us, so we need the tools to help us achieve this," said Steve Gauge. "The equipment we use has to be solid, robust and reliable to enable us to reach our stringent installation and maintenance targets, both quickly and safely.” Andrew Capella, technical director at Wilmat, said: “We are pleased to have secured this contract with a market leader as well known as BT. The contract is testament to the high standard of the platform truck and bespoke service that Wilmat offers its customers.” www.wilmat-handling.co.uk

iPhone safety guide from Troax

Directives and standards are sometimes hard to interpret, and it is easy to feel unsure about whether the correct sort of machine guard has been selected. Therefore, Troax is launching the machine guard industry’s first mobile safety app.

It is a smart application that enables the user to simply and quickly determine the type of machine guard recommended as guidance based on the standard EN ISO 13857-2008 table 2 - High risk.

The easy-to-use tool is something many customers and users of Troax products have demanded.

“The app was

developed to enable users to see which machine guard solution, range and

type is appropriate,” says Martin Ask, product manager for automation and robotics at Troax Headquarters in Sweden. ”We take safety very seriously, and by being the first in our industry with a mobile safety app also proves that we are responsive to our customers needs.”

The app is currently available for iPhone and can be downloaded free of charge via the Apple App store. www.troax.com
