Whitby adds kid's headlamp

D

istributor Whitby & Co has started supplying Princeton Tec’s BOT children’s headlamps to the UK outdoor market.

BOT headlamps come in four bright colours and have a large push button designed for small hands. The BOT operates using two bright LEDs offering three operating modes – high (15 lumens), low (5 lumens) and flash. The child- friendly design also includes a screw-locked battery compartment which prevents accidental access.

The Princeton Tec BOT, with an SRP of £16.95, is powered by two AAA alkaline batteries and will run for approximately four hours in high mode and 9.5 hours in low mode. Whitby & Co will be engaging in a comprehensive PR campaign to promote the launch of the new Princeton Tec BOT children’s headlamp to trade and consumers, backed by an advertising campaign in key consumer titles. Full marketing materials are also available. Garry Woodhouse, sales and marketing director at Whitby & Co, said: “The BOT is small, sturdy and easy to use, yet incredibly powerful. It has the same level of ruggedness and reliability which consumers have come to expect from all Princeton Tec head torches.

“The BOT is a great addition to the Princeton Tec family and we’re sure it will be a big hit with young outdoor enthusiasts and campers. And as the nights draw in as we head into autumn, it will be perfect for walking home from school in those dark winter evenings.”

Walsh Sports marks 50 years F

ootwear brand Walsh Sports is marking 50 years in business with a limited edition V- Ripple shoe. Walsh Sports was started by Norman Walsh in 1961 before being sold on his retirement to Dennis Crompton and his brother Jon in 1996.

Over the last five decades the company claims to have become a leading name in the manufacture of off-road performance and hill running footwear, as well as developing fashion and casual footwear lines. Dennis Crompton said it maintains a loyal customer base and is represented in around 60 specialist stores from Torquay to Glasgow. In addition, it has grown into international markets ranging from Italy and France in Europe to Japan and China in the Far East. Crompton said this has helped Walsh Sports overcome the recent market turmoil. “50 years is a great achievement for the company especially in this competitive market of sports footwear.

“Walsh continues to grow steadily developing on its athletics success with the introduction of casual styles of footwear and clothing that are available in exclusive retailers within Europe and the Far East. Walsh has also produced

footwear collaborations with designers Sir Paul Smith and Margaret Howell.”

He added: “One day all our markets will be up but at the moment some are down. Having interests in different markets around the world has helped us ride the storm.”

The limited edition V-Ripple shoe is made in a classic design with only a gold stamp on the tongue and heel as detailing. It also features a commemorative footbed.

SealSkinz to supply Ministry of Defence S

ealSkinz has signed a four-year, £1.6m deal to supply the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) with waterproof socks.

businesses grow despite difficult climate

egatta Group’s three main businesses have all recorded sales growth during the first half of the year, with Dare 2b seeing a 75 per cent increase compared to the first six months of 2010.

In the first half of 2011, sales at Regatta were up 18 per cent, Craghoppers 13 per cent and Dare 2b 75 per cent over the first half of 2010. Group chief executive Keith Black said growth had come despite a difficult start to the year and a slow, dry Easter period

Black said: “Our business is very weather dependent - we always feel it when it doesn’t rain. However the combination of heavily marketed brands, offering a wide product range, together with our excellent level of service continues to drive strong consumer demand.”

The first batch of socks will be issued to troops serving in Afghanistan in October. SealSkinz said the knee length socks will help to keep troops’ feet dry when they are wading through water- filled ditches and streams. The socks have antimicrobial properties which are similar to those found in medical

dressings to keep feet hygienic. They are also said to be warmer than conventional socks, which will help keep feet warm during the cold winter months.

The socks use a technology that combines a waterproof breathable membrane layer into a close fitting thermal sock. All the socks have an inner layer of high wicking, antimicrobial Merino wool to provide comfort and warmth together with an outer layer of nylon and elastane to offer durability, low absorption and fast drying. Colonel Stephen James, defence clothing team leader for Defence, Equipment and Support,

said: “These new socks will be a real asset to our troops. They are warm and offer complete protection against the wet, which is essential when the tactical situation doesn’t allow a pause to change into dry socks after wading. “They will greatly help our forces to focus on the job in hand.”

Andrew Dahl, managing director of SealSkinz, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this contract. It has come about following significant development work and helps to demonstrate the real benefits of what is a unique and, for many still, an unusual product.”
