Rocket Rentals meets zero carbon challenge

Rocket Rentals of Dursley, Gloucestershire, has supplied specially adapted Thwaites dumpers to contractors working on a ‘zero carbon’ construction project near Bristol, described as the first of its kind in the UK. The Hanham Hall scheme includes restoring a Grade II listed former hospital, creating a commercial centre, and building 195 new homes. On-site plant has to comply with the highest level of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Rocket Rentals Director, Simon Tomblin, said: “Thwaites dumpers are already very fuel efficient, using a low emission-compliant engine as standard, but we also had to flush out the standard system and use bio-degradable hydraulic oil, as well as modifying the downward exhaust pipes to side pipes, to reduce the amount of dust blown about the site.” This year, Rocket Rentals has added more than 40 new Thwaites dumpers to its fleet, including 6, 9 and 10 tonne standard and swivel machines, as well as 3 tonne standard, swivel and narrow dumpers. “The 3 tonne narrow dumpers should be very popular, being hired out with our 3 tonne mini excavators of the same width, allowing both machines to access narrow paths and walkways, especially when working at the rear of domestic housing.”

Selwood opens specialist centre

Selwood has opened a specialist pump centre in Liverpool, with a dedicated team delivering technical support and training throughout the company’s northern branch network in the supply and installation of electric submersible pumping equipment. It also services

major water company contracts with United Utilities and Yorkshire Water.

Technicians are trained to examine and re-certify explosion proof submersible pumping equipment, and Selwood reports that the service has quickly proved so successful in the northern region that it has now been expanded to become its main distribution centre for this equipment, serving the whole of the country, until a similar facility is opened in the south.

Speedy’s green choice

Speedy Hire is set to boost its green credentials, having taken delivery of 19 Ford Transit ECOnetic vans. The vehicles, supplied through Bolton Ford dealer, Gordons, will be used by Speedy engineers to provide rapid transport to and from maintenance calls around the UK. They join an existing fleet of approximately 2,000 Ford vehicles. The ECOnetic was selected for its improved fuel economy, vehicle tax benefits and low CO2 emissions. Speedy’s Transport and Logistics Director, Ian Leonard, said: “We have set an ambitious target for the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint, and we believe that the ECOnetic’s environmental credentials will help us achieve that. These first 19 vans will be closely monitored in service and, if they live up to expectations, then I am sure they will be the first of many to join the Speedy fleet.”

KDM Hire adds Niftylifts

KDM Hire, which has depots in Cookstown and Belfast, has bought several new Niftylift powered access machines, including both replacements and fleet additions. The order comprised HR12N self-propelled booms, 150T and 170 trailer-mounted platforms and HR17N boom lifts. The company has also added the recently introduced SD120T 4x4 self-drive boom, which can traverse soft or rough ground, offers a 12.6m lift height and can be towed to site on a 3500kg trailer. The machine can be battery or diesel operated for indoor and outdoor use. In 2009, KDM Hire was the winner of the Passionate Independent Hirer Award, presented at the Executive Hire Show.
