MARKET REPORT WELFARE UNITS
Latest products Boss Cabins gives more choice
Boss Cabins MD Graham Stansfield, and Director Tim Allan, bought into the welfare unit business last year through the purchase of what was the Boss Space range. They have now established a production facility in Grantham where a revitalised range with new options is being produced. The single axle Comfort Space unit can accommodate up to six persons.
The road towable, anti-vandal cabin has an operating weight of 1730kg, and on-site security is enhanced by the ability to hydraulically lower the cabin onto the ground to hide its road wheels, and then covering the tow bar with a lockable steel shroud. It provides a canteen/rest area, a toilet/washroom and a drying room. It is supplied with an integral 6kVA Stephill super silent diesel generator.
The unit can be supplied with the option of an Eco-Assist power management system that has an AC inverter and gel batteries, designed to reduce generator running time. Also available is a more cost-effective ‘hybrid’ version that allows heating and lighting to be used without the generator operating.

Garic has been able to adapt its ‘messing van’ welfare unit for use as a mobile incident command unit by The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), an operational team of police officers responsible for providing motorway policing across Staffordshire, West Mercia and West Midlands Police forces. “We looked into procuring a bespoke incident command
unit from a number of companies usually associated with building this type of vehicle for the emergency services, but found that costs spiralled well into six figures,” commented Steve Rounds of CMPG. “In the current economic climate we could not justify spending that amount of money on a vehicle that had a very narrow focus, so we needed to find a cheaper and more flexible alternative.” The manufacturer has configured the unit so that the entire vehicle weighs less than 3500kg, enabling it to be driven on a Class B car licence. It has eight travelling seats, including the driver, and can be used as a minibus for removing stranded passengers from breakdowns, collisions and vehicle seizures where multiple patrol cars would have been required in the past. Behind the five rear seats is a kitchen area with hot and cold running water, a microwave and a water boiler, allowing hot food and drinks to be served. A full size flush toilet is provided in the rear compartment.
