EXECUTIVE REPORT continued
“We’ve also built up fleets of ArcGen 15kVA, 40kVA ‘ultra silent’ and 60KVA ‘super silent’ generators. These largest units are ideal for the event hire market and have recently powered the large Gig in the Park and will also be supplied to the ‘Battle of the Flowers’ parade, which is one of the island’s summer highlight events.
“With our contracting background, we know what will work and what won’t work on the island.”
In spite of 4Hire’s relentless progress, Jersey has not been unaffected by the global recession. Mick states, “it took longer to get to us than the mainland, and our recession was shorter and less steep. Having bottomed out late last year, our construction industry has turned the corner. The States of Jersey Government introduced a £44m fiscal stimulus in the first three months of last year, and brought forward a number of long term construction and housing maintenance and refurbishment projects.”
Most recent purchases have included a Kramer 2506 compact telescopic handler. “We have a lot of work in underground parking areas for flats and offices, with restricted access of only 2m, where we need to get materials in and out. Conventional telescopic handlers can’t meet the height restrictions and the Kramer has been very successful.” 4Hire also recently added a Wacker Neuson 1101CP tracked skid steer loader, and its latest purchases are Wacker Neuson 50Z3 and 75Z3 5.2 tonne and 7.6 tonne zero tail swing excavators, as well as a Hinowa TP1600 tracked forklift.
“With our contracting background, we know what will work and what won’t work on the island. We also offer a site survey service, by visiting our customer’s site and recommending the most suitable item of equipment. We are always trying to introduce customers to new equipment and educate them on the latest kit available.
“Safety training obviously goes hand-in-hand with this and we have a crusade to train our team, customers and, even, competitors to NPORS standard.” Roger Quenault is responsible for 4Hire’s training operation and he is accredited by NPORS, CSCS, IPAF and PASMA.
In November 09, 4Hire launched 4Safety, which provides courses varying from basic safety in the work place through to specific training for heavy plant operators. “We provide Health & Safety instruction and certification for any of our equipment, using locally skilled trainers. We are one of the testing centres for Jersey Passport to Site Safety, which was instigated by the Jersey Builders Federation. Having achieved Investors in People in February this year, we now intend to make 4Safety a standalone business within the next 12 months.”
Apart from the obvious delights of re-visiting Jersey - my first visit to the race course on the top of the cliffs at Les Landes being a standout - my time with 4Hire was equally enjoyable. The team is evidently passionate about hire, is friendly, professional and forward thinking. With its wealth of experience, its eye for innovative plant and equipment - the company has become a regular visitor to Executive Hire Show, I suspect that we’ll hear quite a lot more from the Channel Islands in the years to come.
