Q - So how did you get into the Custom side of things? A- Well obviously the Funfair/ Carnival rides are on a com- mission basis so I was only called in when I was needed, so I had also kept up my bike and car painting side of things going. If you want to make it in this business you have to be prepared to be an all rounder there are very few airbrush artists that I know of that specialize in just one thing at the end of the day you have to give the client what they want. Fortunately for me my work was getting noticed. I pulled off quite a stunt at one of the biggest bike shows in the North East of England with a Vespa Scooter I painted and entered in the 125cc section of the bike show. I remember getting a lot of snide comments from a lot of bikers for having the nerve to enter a scooter into a bike comp but at the end of the day they were eating their words as I won the award for best dressed bike in the 125cc section, needles to say there were a few unhappy bikers around. But that exposure helped me no end. I was also able to turn the other passion of mine, drumming into a bit of a money maker. Through some contacts that I’ve got in the local music bizz I got a gig as a session drum- mer at a local recording studio. I made a sponsorship deal with the owner of the drum shop that I had painted some drum kits for in return they would get me some paint jobs. Up until now the deal is working out just fine which I am thankful for due to the fact that the Fair/Carnival work has dropped off mostly because vinyl print is easier to apply and of course is cheaper.
Q - So at what stage are you now with your work and have you had anymore recognition? A - Ok I do not know if you could call it recognition as such, there has been work of mine in various magazines including Truck & Driver, Trucking, Street fighter Bikes, and a Brit- ish Magazine Scootering. People who have seen my work in those magazines have gotten in touch with me and I have done some work for them. I also recently painted a drum kit for the Heavy Metal Band Venom for their European Tour. Through various contacts and some advertising work comes in at a steady pace and I have to be thankful for that so in combination with my drumming for a couple of bands plus my session work I am able to keep busy. I have to tell you trying to make it in the world of airbrushing is not an easy thing to do you have to try and build up a client base and have quite a bit of luck. And talking of luck the gods must be looking down on me because they sent you by to have a chat. So I thank Airbrush Technique for giving me the oppor- tunity to tell you about myself and my work and don’t forget to check out my web site
