GUARDIAN ANGEL by ROB CANTY

I am using a 2’x3’ sheet of galvanized steel. First it is primed black then scuffed with 2000 grit (scuff pad would be fine just make sure it isn’t to aggressive). I wipe it down good with Prep Sol following up with a dry clean rag until there is no sheen. I start with a white stabillo pencil and draw out the form of my angel in the center foreground. Make sure you go very light and soft with the pencil so you can easily remove and adjust. Here I went much harder than you need to so it would show clearly in the pictures. If you go to hard it isn’t the end just

makes things a little more difficult...no problem. To the right I have a strip of masking tape and a small mask of a ornate cross. This will be a sceptor rising out from the water. The mask is Oramask 810 from Oracal materials. The 810 is made for curved surfaces and works well. I used this but you would stick with 811 for rigid flat surfaces or 813 if you want transparency also. I cut the mask with my CE5000-40-CRP 15” plotter using illustrator and cutting master pro.

Here I begin lightly laying on my gray thinned out with two extra drops of reducer. There will be several light sources as the painting progresses but by far the scepter will be throwing the brightest illumination. So I build up stronger grays where the scepters light will hit. I am also building a highlight on the top

left area of her hair to simulate the moonlight coming from the full moon that will be above and slightly to the left. I have focused on developing her shape (face, body, hand and hair), and how the light will be hitting them.
