Vienna There are around 3400 machines.


A maximum of two per site are permitted, except in two areas where more are allowed: the Prater and the Böhmische Prater.


Styria Around 3000 machines are in operation although 4700 licences have been issued.


Carinthia There are some 800 machines in use. A minimum 85 percent payout is required.


Lower Austria Unusually, the rules here encourage larger venues rather than small operations.


Austria has monopolies on casinos and lotteries, held by Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries respectively (see below).


However, in four of the nine Austrian federal states, other


businesses are allowed to offer consumers play on gaming machines with a maximum stake of ¤0.50 and payout of ¤20. This makes small-scale amusements operations possible.


As well as adhering to the national stake and payout


regulations, operators must comply with each of the four states’ own rules. The current situation in each of these is outlined below.


Only arcades are permitted, with a minimum of 15 machines


per site; AWPs are not allowed in other venues. There are around 800 machines in use.
