Once you arrive at the island village of Kizhi you will set out on a walking tour through the Open Air Museum of Architecture. Here, you will see ancient wooden houses, windmills and churches, highlighted by the famous three-tiered Preobranzhenskaya (Transfiguration) Church. This fairytale structure was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail.
The Heart of Moscow
In Russian, the word kremlin refers to any major fortified complex. But in Moscow there is one very special Kremlin, adjacent to Red Square. Inside its crenellated red brick walls you will see four palaces and a variety of churches, monasteries and official buildings — as well as one enormous bell. It also serves as the official residence of Russia’s President.
