A few highlights of your journey Palace of the Popes

Burgundy Wines Follow France’s Burgundy wine route to Beaune. Dating back more than 2,000 years, it has become the trading center for Burgundy’s fine wines. A highlight is Hôtel Dieu, a beautifully preserved hospice in the French Gothic style and owner of many local vineyards. Here, you learn about viticulture and sample a number of the regional varietals in one of Beaune’s best cellars.

Inspired by conflicts in Rome, Pope Clement V moved the papal court to Avignon in 1309. He built the Gothic-style Palace of the Popes, which was home to seven popes in as many decades.

Vieux Lyon

On the west bank of the Saône is Lyon’s intriguing Old Town. The area developed during the Renaissance as part of the thriving silk industry; it is a maze of patrician houses and narrow passageways used by silk weavers to deliver their goods. Once you have your fill of exploring the neighborhood, indulge in some hearty Lyonnaise cuisine.

Arles x Temple of Augustus and Livia, Vienne Roman Artifacts

The Roman Empire’s reach was enormous, and evidence of the Romans’ presence in France is everywhere. In Vienne, guests will see the beautifully preserved Temple of Augustus and Livia, a Roman amphitheater and other structures. And in Arles, visit Les Arènes, an arena that seats 20,000 and is still in use today.
