or Spring/Summer 12 Mpdclick considers a theme of ‘Momentum’. Already we are seeing a major shift in consumer attitudes from the despondent to the enthused,

particularly in the younger generations. As people across the globe realign their lives following the turbulence of recent years, the pace is gathering speed for a new lifestyle model that embodies a sustainable and collaborative future. With this in mind three diverse trends are cited as key influencers for the footwear market for the upcoming summer season. Firstly, in ‘Water Footprint’, we consider the

potential of water as a key source of energy for the future, along with the development of transport systems and the preservation of coastlines around the world. In aesthetic terms,

reference point. For men’s styles, performance is key; rubberized finishes lend themselves to multiple strap flip-flop and sandal shapes in bright colourways while smarter collections will adopt washed, worn and frayed espadrilles and deck- shoes with rope laces. Shell pink, aqua and soft sea spray are key accent colours, grounded by natural sand hues. In ‘National Hybrids’ we explore a

contemporary vision of multicultural Great Britain as it is propelled into the limelight for the 2012 London Olympics. In the same year we also welcome the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II which will once again throw the globe into street party mode; cue high-tea styling and a healthy smattering of chintz. Here a cut and paste approach reigns, as diverse multicultural

Finally, ‘The Curator’ looks at a growing desire

to leave a legacy, practical solutions for revamping our surroundings and ideas of defying creative convention. History is celebrated and romanticized as family heirlooms and thrift-shop finds are lovingly restored to their former glory or customized with a new contemporary identity while self expression through art updates traditional in-your-face protest styles. An ornamental aesthetic dominates and

techniques from scrapbooking to gilding and embroidery inspire. Corsages, ruffles and floral motifs are juxtaposed against battered leather, straps and studs for a hard edge. Luxe velvet and lace in aged gold and parchment hues are choice fabrics for Victoriana style covered button shoe boots. Metallic embossing and prints are distinctly

deep-sea and ocean life, Indonesia and popular water sports such as surf and scuba provide tangible inspiration for commercial and fashion- forward footwear ranges. Molded shapes are important, referencing the

body-form fit of neoprene wet-suits while iridescent and reflective fabrics and finishes echo the mesmerizing shimmer of summer sun on the sea’s surface. Reptile skin makes a strong appearance along with pleated fabric embellishments providing texture and organic tactility. Natural wood and cork wedge and block heel sandals feature lattice leather cut-away uppers and while classically feminine, heeled courts feature scalloped edges to mimic the swell of waves. references are clashed with quintessentially British stereotypes. Boy-meets-girl footwear continues to delight

fashion savvy female customers as punched brogues are re-worked in unexpected shades and boast ornamental printed linings with patterns ranging from English tea rose repeats to exotic paisley designs. Chris Benz’s wallpaper floral wedges provide a key reference for occasional party and wedding styles. Menswear styles juxtapose ultra dapper and dynamic sports styles, expect classic leather golf shoes and loafers to feature bright colour flash straps and trims. Vintage cream and rusted orange are important accents, reinforcing a traditional theme while faded strawberry pink and cucumber hues are versatile and packed with fresh summer appeal.

baroque in style: John Fluevog’s decorative low heel ankle boot show at the Spring/Summer 11 edition of Magic, Las Vegas, provides a good example. Similarly, pull on boots with characteristic covered buttons will make a strong statement within menswear ranges in soft, distressed leather variations. Other styles set to dominate are lace-up bovver boots and multi-strap sneakers featuring floral prints or corsage details and lounge slippers in antique and brushed velvet.
