UK GATEWAYS Conan Busby, planning and cargo analyst at the UK’s East Midlands airport (EMA), believes that the gateway is “very freight-friendly and that’s largely because of our central location”. As part of The Manchester Airports Group, Busby said EMA is working hard to boost its daytime schedules, “as we have a lot of integrator traffic that obviously comes through at night, so we have all these facilities that are available during the day”. The 12-month period up to the end of April was a record for EMA, with 311,764 tonnes of flown cargo handled. The group’s Manchester airport, meanwhile, sees plenty of air

BELGIUM Belgium’s Ostend-Bruges airport saw its air freight throughput drop by 13.6 percent year-on-year in 2010, says CEO Gino Vanspauwen.
Negotiations are under way between the Belgian government and a potential partner, with the concession to run the airport expected to be granted in 2012 and to start by 1 January 2013. Among the benefits of the deal: “The government will take charge of the safety and security issues... So it will free us up to invest more,” he said. This is in line with the airport’s plan to make Ostend more
attractive to carriers – including freighter operators. Vanspauwen stated: “When airlines come, they want logistics facilities to be available. So we are going to build a second warehouse.... suitable for B747 freighter aircraft and equipped with cold store facilities.”
