decision to embark on a series of mergers over the past two years.
CHINA CARGO Shanghai-headquartered China Cargo Airlines is the first dedicated air cargo carrier in China. It became the largest cargo airline by freighter fleet size after a merger with Great Wall Airlines and Shanghai Cargo Airlines earlier this year. Currently it operates routes to the US including calls to Anchorage, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York with 18 weekly frequencies, of which 11 fly to Chicago. Shanghai is the dominant air cargo hub in China as well as a
retail, financial and distribution centre. In 2010, Shanghai Pudong International airport was rated as the world’s third-

serves US destinations from Shanghai: Anchorage, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Dallas. In February this year, Yangtze River Express inaugurated a new three times a week B747 freighter service from Shanghai Pudong via Qingdao to Los Angeles, further strengthening its North America connectivity. The route marked the first intercontinental freighter flight for Qingdao, located in the northeast province of Shandong. UPS has been operating direct air services from the US to China since 2001, with six weekly frequencies serving Shanghai
The Incheon alternative
In addition to direct air cargo services, several carriers provide air cargo services between China and the US through non-China Asian hubs. In South Korea, Seoul’s Incheon International airport
serves as an important hub linking China and the US. Asiana Airlines and Korean Airlines both serve the China - US cargo market using sixth freedom rights. The carriers provide services between Chinese cities
and Seoul, with connecting all-cargo service between Seoul and the US. Bellyhold capacity is also available on their passenger flights between Korea and the US. Besides, Jade Cargo International operates freighter service via Incheon to Los Angeles and Polar Air Cargo has also set up a hub in Incheon to integrate its China network.
