interview

How widespread is the recognition of e-Freight within the leading industry bodies and trade associations that are able to recommend its use to their members?

I would like to highlight our work with the International Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations (FIATA) to develop the new electronic air waybill. The new standard is now being progressively adopted by e-Freight participants around the world. In November last year, the Global Air Cargo Advisory Group

(GACAG) was formed with e-Freight and security as its key priorities. GACAG brings together IATA, FIATA, TIACA (The International Air Cargo Association) and the Global Shippers’ Forum. Along with this, local governance groups are formed in

markets where e-Freight is live to promote paper-free air cargo, global best practices and local solutions.

How can air cargo companies utilise the e-Freight programme to make their transportation chain safer?

We are calling on governments to expand the use of e-Freight from inbound shipments to outbound as well, and use the electronic data to intelligently manage freight security. e-Freight’s ability to provide data to Customs authorities in

advance positions it as an ideal example of a security solution that makes sense for the supply chain. As an industry, together we must build a platform for an even more competitive industry that is safer, more efficient and profitable.

Where can people involved in the air cargo industry go to find more information on the e-Freight initiative?

The e-Freight website (www.iata.org/e-freight) provides up-to- date information on the e-Freight status of countries around the world. Find out which locations are live and which airlines and freight forwarders are participating. The e-Freight handbook is a comprehensive guide to

implementation that includes all the messaging standards required, and is available for free download on the IATA website.
