Report
In this issue, we have an in-depth report on the ECA Electrical Industry Conference 2011, which brought together leading members of the industry for a series of illuminating and thought-provoking presentations and offered a stimulating forum for debate about the future of the industry. You can read all about it on pages 42-47. We also have a fascinating insight into the future shape of the electrical industry, with a summary of the report 2021 Vision: the Future of the Electrical Contracting Industry – an important research project that was jointly conceived and funded by the ECA and NICEIC. This looks at the challenges and opportunities facing the industry over the coming decade.
Government-led initiatives are, of course, a key driver of the sustainability agenda, and the much-discussed Green Deal promises to offer contractors further opportunities to boost business. To explain what this means for you, we have an article on pages 18 -21, How the Green Deal works, outlining the proposed scheme.
New view
Among our mix of regular features and informative articles, we also have an address from the new ECA president, Alun Pearson, who outlines his agenda for the coming year in his Presidential view column on page 15. It’s an interesting time for the electrical contracting industry, with a unique mix of challenges and opportunities. Enjoy the sunshine.
Phil Lattimore Editor
elcome to the July issue of ECA Today. With summer here, and thoughts turning to sunshine (or the lack of it), it may be a good time for minds to wander towards more than topping up the sun tan. The market for solar
photovoltaics has been booming over the last year, with renewables now fi rmly on the agenda for a growing number of electrical contractors. But while the renewables market – thanks to Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) – provides a high-profi le way for ECA members to benefi t from the sustainability agenda, there are other areas of potential growth that should interest contractors. Many of the speakers at the recent ECA Electrical Industry Conference in Marbella highlighted potentially lucrative – and sustainable – opportunities for diversifying and growing businesses, based on the core skills and knowledge that the electrical contractor can deliver. From energy effi ciency measures and intelligent building control systems to EV charging and lighting, electrical contactors are in a unique position to capitalise on growth areas in the sector.
