responsible for the design, manufacture and integration of the complex mission systems for the aircraſt carriers. Each 65,000tonne aircraft carrier

will be versatile enough to be used for operations ranging from supporting war efforts to providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief. Te QE class will be the centre piece of Britain’s military capability and will operate at least 12 of the carrier variant Joint Strike Fighter jets. In recent weeks, power conversion

specialist Converteam has shipped the first of two 75tonne, 36MW generators designed specifically to match the electrical power requirement of the propulsion motors for the QE class aircraſt carriers. These are major components of the

electrical system for the two new ships, for which Converteam has designed the innovative Integrated Full Electric Power (IFEP) and propulsion system. The two 36MW generators,

manufactured in Rugby, will supply the four 20MW Converteam Advanced

Induction Motors. Te generators will be coupled with their Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines before final installation in the ship. In addition to the supply of propulsion and associated generators,

Converteam’s scope of supply includes four additional electrical power generators, the high-voltage switchboards, the variable-speed drives and harmonic filters plus the Electrical Power Control and Management System (EPCAMS). WT

International Journal of Maritime Engineering 2011

The RINA will publish the first part of the International Journal of Maritime Engineering (IJME) in March 2011, and the subsequent parts in June, September and December.

The IJME provides a forum for the reporting and discussion on technical and scientific issues associated with the design and construction of marine vessels and offshore structures. The IJME will be published four times a year as Part A1-A4 of the Transactions of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. The IJME is essential reading for all those concerned with this sector of the global maritime industry.
