Siemens to provide hybrid propulsion for Italian coast guard

Te latest order placed with Siemens Marine Solutions suggests that diesel- electric propulsion is not only suitable for large merchant and naval vessels but also for smaller ships too.

This supply vessel for the Italian Coast Guard will be fitted with Siemens’ innovative ‘Siship EcoProp’ hybrid propulsion system.

I

talian shipyard Cantieri Navali Megaride has commissioned Siemens to equip a 65m supply vessel for the

Italian coast guard with a ‘Siship EcoProp’ hybrid propulsion system. The innovative propulsion solution

was developed to meet the requirements of smaller

ships. Diesel engines are

combined with innovative, electric-drive components, each of which has an output of 180kW per shaft. An added benefit of the system is that it can be installed in tight spaces. Various modes of operation optimize utilisation of the diesel engines, resulting in reduced fuel and lower emissions. Siemens says other advantages over

conventional diesel engines include a greater cruising range, a higher level of reliability and less noise pollution. The EcoProp system is scheduled to be commissioned at the beginning of 2012. The propulsion machinery ordered

by the Naples-based shipyard includes two main gear units, electric propulsion motors and the hybrid propulsion control

RENK AG in Germany has announced that 20 examples of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) ordered by the US Navy will be equipped with RENK gear units. Two LCS teams have been contracted simultaneously to build 10 ships each, with Lockheed Martin having proposed a steel monohull of 115m in length and the Austal team focusing on an aluminium trimaran with a length of 127m. Both designs are waterjet-driven. Prototypes of both series, the USS Freedom (Lockheed Martin) and USS Independence (Austal), were handed over to the US Navy in 2009. Austal’s trimaran is already equipped with gear units from RENK, and the US Navy has recently decided to broaden the contract with the company to include the vessels built by Lockheed Martin, so RENK will supply the entire LCS fleet with its main gear units. In addition, RENK has also received an order for gears for eight national security cutters (NSC) for the US Coast Guard. Two NSCs are already in regular service.

The orders awarded to RENK have a value of more than €100 million. The units will be shipped between 2012 and 2017.
