—modern man. Specimens in this display share the same kingdom, phylum, class and order before branching into different families, genus and species. Another display shows skull evolution and a replica of “Lucy,” the earliest fossil evidence of a bipedal hominid, stands nearby. The original “Lucy” is estimated to be ap- proximately 3.2 million years old.

The remaining exhibits— and there are many—are of many different kinds of ani- mals—birds, cats, dogs, etc. One case is devoted to Oklaho- ma wildlife. Snakes and reptile skeletons, mounted in slither position, are big attractions, especially for kids. A skeletal star of the reptile case is a Ko- modo dragon. The live animal was a gift to President George H.W. Bush by the President of Indonesia in 1990.

Touchable skeletons on the

main fl oor include an elephant skeleton and two skulls, and skeletons of a giraffe, a hip- popotamus and a white rhino. “New exhibits are constant- ly being added. We have over 300 skeletons and we’re still growing. And we’re the only skeleton museum in the Unit- ed States,” Jay said.

Jay seems surprised but pleased at the reception the museum has received. The whole family—Jay, Kim and their children Jay, Jr., Josh, Ja- ron and Shala—is involved in some aspect of the enterprise. One could say Jay has his own skeleton crew. His childhood fascination has become a dream fulfilled. And visitors to the museum are the benefi - ciaries.

The Museum of Osteology, located at 10301 South Sun- nylane Road in Oklahoma City, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5. One child un- der three is admitted free per paid adult. For more informa- tion: www.museumofosteol- ogy.org or (405) 814-0006. OL
