he aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) industry has been using Lean to wring out costs for about a decade. So how is Lean—an approach developed for mass production— working out in this low-volume, high- variability sector? Although the production philosophy is not universal, users report encouraging results. Major players are applying Lean not only to industrial processes but also to engineering, communications and management. This is a good sign, but much more is needed, insists Lean Enterprise Institute Senior Advisor Jim Womack. He warns that management needs to be much more Lean in order to do Lean. Womack spoke at the Lean Flight Initiative (LFI) conference in Atlanta last month, which hosted speakers from aviation, the automobile industry and academe.
