Exeter is a historic cathedral and university city which has grown from its Roman origins into a thriving commercial centre. In 2007, a £225 million redevelopment took place in the main shopping district, creating one of the most vibrant and diverse shopping areas in the south west. In addition, the city has been increasing its commercial standing with various business parks attracting large companies, such as the Met office and creating thousands of jobs for the area. 2010 was also the year that the Exeter Chiefs rugby union team reached the premiership, further enhancing the appeal of the city.
The local property market is currently in a period of change, with a large increase in the level of applicants registering to buy
and a relatively low level of stock. Although there is a large imbalance in supply and demand, sales are at historically low levels across the board. That said, properties coming to the market at a sensible price, in good decorative order and correctly marketed are selling. Now, more than ever it is important to choose an experienced agent with good local knowledge and a recognised brand behind them.
The lettings market is also experiencing low stock and high applicant demand. However, in contrast to sales, lettings are being snapped up within hours, or even days, of coming onto the market, which is creating an increase in rental prices and making it harder for those in rented accommodation to put money towards a deposit to buy.
