PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A university is the sum of its people. Te future of Nipissing depends on the people who study and work here who continue to build this institution and help it thrive. Te faculty, staff, friends, and alumni are the true foundation of the Nipissing experience. Tat foundation is full of potential, because it is built on a network of connectivity among all the people who have been part of Nipissing’s past, as well as the many people who have been affected by our outstanding graduates over the years. Although we are young, approaching our 20th anniversary as an independent institution, our roots stretch back with just over a hundred years of teacher education in North Bay; these teachers have been the multipliers of learning for generations of learners!

Our students and graduates continue to tell us that we are delivering one of the finest post-secondary experiences in the nation, as evidenced by Nipissing’s consistently high scores in surveys that seek to measure student satisfaction, such as the Globe and Mail’s University Report Card, Te National Survey of Student Engagement and the Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium.

Nipissing University – a young, energetic and progressive institution with many achievements, milestones and, most especially people, to celebrate.

Nipissing holds a deep commitment to our origins as a primarily undergraduate, student-centred university while continuing to evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our students and our society. Te university has unveiled a new strategic plan, titled Academic Excellence, to guide us forward to 2015. Recently, Nipissing appointed a new chancellor, Dr. Jon S. Dellandrea, whose experience and success in advancing post-secondary education is unmatched in Canada. Dr. Dellandrea shares Nipissing’s commitment to effecting positive change in the world, and especially the importance of Aboriginal education to Canada’s future. Physically, the university is growing in leaps and bounds, with new buildings on each of our campuses in North Bay, Muskoka and Brantford. Construction is nearing completion on the new Harris Learning Library (a unique partnership with Canadore College), Phase I of the Institute for Integrative Health Education and Research, and a new residence on the Muskoka campus in Bracebridge. With the aid of a $15 million benefaction, Nipissing is enriching and deepening its offerings in the field of education with the creation of the Schulich School of Education and 100 new Schulich Scholarships, allowing us to raise the profile and impact of our already renowned school to an iconic status befitting the name.

Te elements of our strategic plan are: People, Programs, Research and Resources. Te key to all our initiatives is, of course, our people. In this Report you will meet a selection of the many outstanding individuals at Nipissing University and discover how they are helping to develop the caring, creative, critical, engaged leaders who will make a difference for Ontario, Canada and the world. Te future is very exciting as we reach beyond our campuses into broader local and international communities through the work of our faculty, students and alumni, whose accomplishments continue to inspire. It gives me great pleasure to share some of those accomplishments with you and we look forward to many more as the future unfolds.

— Dr. Lesley Lovett-Doust 1
