multiplier effect in the students’ home environment, bringing communities together with learners. Chair in Aboriginal Education. Nipissing University has a national reputation for preparing teachers. In recognition of this strength, Nipissing University will establish a Chair of Aboriginal Learning held by an Aboriginal educator and scholar – who will, with colleagues and communities, research and develop pedagogy and curricula designed to ensure Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal teachers have the relevant skills and tools to improve the quality of learning opportunities for Aboriginal students across the province and country.

Improving Achievement through Educational Technology and Quality of Teaching. Tis initiative will assist faculty and students in using new technologies, including Web 2.0, online formats and blended learning opportunities to enhance the reach and effectiveness of their teaching. Social networking systems and other Internet-mediated interactions will be studied as we develop best practices, particularly to reach the dispersed rural communities in the North. Instructional designers will guide faculty and students in producing the materials needed for rich and effective on-line and new media- based learning. Research and practice collaborations with practicing teachers and regional Boards of Education will be an important part of this developing area.

“Te fact that Nipissing is a small, student-centred

university in northern Ontario was important; an investment in this institution can have significant impact. Te university has proven to me that they have interesting ideas about education and I wanted to help raise Nipissing’s School of Education to the status of a national leader in innovative education and educational research,” said Mr. Schulich.

Te benefaction will also ensure Nipissing continues to attract top students in math and science thanks to the Schulich Scholarships. Under the scholarships, 100 Nipissing University students enrolled in a bachelor of science degree in mathematics or science with the intention of becoming teachers, will be eligible to receive a $6,000 Schulich Scholarship towards achieving that goal.

Te Schulich School of Education at Nipissing University is the latest jewel in the global Schulich family of educational institutions, joining the Schulich School of Business at York University, the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, the Schulich School of Music at McGill University,

the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University and the Schulich Faculty of Chemistry at the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion).
