Alumni leaders

In 2010, Nipissing presented both Judy Derick (BEd ‘84) and Kim Burley (BEd ‘86) with a Distinguished Alumni Award for their extensive professional and volunteer-based work.

Derick, a teacher in the Eastern Townships School Board, was nominated for the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2010. She has embraced the use of technology in her classroom to inspire her students to greatness. Working with the National Film

Board and a teaching colleague, Derick’s students have created professional quality Claymation movies. Professionally certified in William Glasser’s “Choice Teory and Reality Terapy”, Derick gives freely of her time to work with students who need behavioural guidance and support. She also works as a mentor for new teachers, passing on her skill, experience and love of teaching to the next generation.

Burley is a science teacher in the Red Deer Public School District #104. She has excelled in her profession and in service to her community. She is a pioneer of the International Baccalaureate (IB) biology program in her school and also works as an external examiner for IB International. She leads workshops all over North America that improve the skills of other teachers in the IB program. She co-wrote a provincially- approved Biology textbook and has contributed her considerable insight to the education ministry’s initiative to incorporate First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives in the provincial curriculum at all levels.

Nipissing’s original maniac a true leader

Trina Prince is a maniac. Yes, you read that correctly. Nipissing is a university that’s big on spirit – exemplified by the Lakers Maniacs: the loudest, proudest, most fun-filled and cheeriest cheerleading group on campus. Usually found engaging large crowds to cheer wildly in support of Lakers athletics teams, Trina carries the title, Original Head Lakers Maniac for Nipissing University Varsity Teams. She is also one of our most passionate student leaders, who will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Arts double Honours degree in English and Religions and Cultures.

Trina is also committed to student government, having twice been elected Vice-President, Student Life for the Nipissing University Student Union. In that role, she organized many student trips, managed the student food bank, helped lead the record-breaking Shinerama campaign for Multiple Sclerosis research, and represented all students in a wide array of committees and clubs on campus and on the university’s Board of Governors. Trina has further developed her leadership skills through active participation in New Student Orientation, Frosh Week, Nipissing University Student Ambassadors, the alumni homecoming committee and the Canadian Organization of Campus Activities conference. Her exceptional contributions to the university have been recognized with a Dave Marshall Leadership Award, and the Lakers Spirit Award.
