Math counts, locally, and globally

Te idea of being a committed local citizen and simultaneously being a global one is embraced fully by the Math and Computer Science department at Nipissing. As scholars, they have a significant presence on the international stage while being deeply committed to promoting math scholarship here at home.

Locally, the department is a key player in the Nipissing University Mathematics Education, Research, and Information Council (NUMERIC). NUMERIC represents a group of educators from the university and the local community who share an interest in promoting the learning and appreciation of mathematics through a variety of sponsored events. Each year, they host a series of math competitions for local high-school students in which students learn about and work to solve math problems. Te group also hosts Math Circles, which are free, informal meetings for students in grades 5 – 12 who enjoy math and problem solving.

In the international arena, Nipissing has developed a significant pool of excellence in mathematics research, especially in the field of topology. Faculty members in this department all hold grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Last year, the university hosted leading international mathematics researchers for a conference entitled, “Recent Advances in Topological and Measure-theoretic Methods in Dynamical Systems.” Topology has many applications in disciplines outside mathematics, including quantum physics, chemistry, economics and a wide array of complex dynamical systems in nature.

Undergraduate Research Conference puts student research on display

Te opportunity to take part in original research can engage and inspire students, to make them fully aware of their world and how they can positively impact it using knowledge and skills gained through their studies. At Nipissing, undergraduate students have opportunities to conduct high-level research, and each spring the university celebrates some of the top student researchers at the Undergraduate Student Research Conference.

Te conference features research posters, paper and panel presentations from students representing each of Nipissing’s faculties as well as some guests from other universities. It provides a professional venue where students can present their research and receive feedback from peers, professors and the community.
