Nipissing University and 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics
Dr. John Nadeau from the School of Business is an active and respected scholar in the field of marketing and consumer behaviour. During the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, he collaborated with researchers Louise Heslop from Carleton University and Norm O’Reilly from Syracuse University, to examine the views of residents and tourists of the Games and the host country before and after the mega-event. Te research was done within the context of marketing theory on country image effects and psychology theories attribution. Te paper, titled China’s Olympic Destination: Beijing Tourist Evaluations of China and the 2008 Games, won the Best Paper Award at the prestigious International Conference on Destination Branding and Marketing, held in Macau, China.
Te paper, funded in part by a research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, was the first cross- national study of the Olympics and their effects using before-and-after event measures. Interestingly, despite the widely-recognized technical success of the Games, post-event assessments were overwhelmingly lower than the evaluations carried out ahead of the events.
Long-term, the paper has important implications for both the effects of mega-events on country images and the effects of the host country on the event brand image. Tese issues have relevance for countries seeking to host mega-events and those who manage these events and make decision about where they should be held.
