Varsity Sports

Varsity athletics offer students excellent opportunities to build leadership skills and, judging by the games that often play to sold out crowds, engagement with varsity sports boosts university pride and helps to heighten Nipissing’s profile. In 2009, Nipissing launched a varsity men’s hockey team, joining the existing varsity sports of men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Soon after, a cross-country running team and a Nordic ski team joined the array of varsity opportunities available at Nipissing.

Te Lakers hockey team has been especially successful, earning a ranking in the national top ten on three separate occasions and making the playoffs in both of its two years of existence. With the third highest attendance in the country, the team also fosters town and gown relationships, inspiring our entire community.

Varsity athletes give a great deal of their time and effort to the betterment of the university so that they can play at a highly competitive level. In so doing, these young leaders learn valuable lessons about time management, discipline, teamwork and setting goals. Tey have also been involved in giving back to the community through coaching summer camp and playing fundraiser games with, and for, community groups.
