FEATURES
The Waterhouse at South Bund is an energetically conceived and executed 19-room boutique hotel with a capacity to surprise.
e Design in Shanghai
Starting with a 1930s warehouse in Shanghai’s old docklands, Singaporean lawyer-turned-hotelier Loh Lik Peng (a panelist on this year’s ILTM Asia Ultratravel Forum) embarked on a total renovation, stocking the interiors with his trademark designer furniture (Anne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, et al) which gives the property added polish.
Many of the old walls remain in their original condition while new elements emerge from the old, defining public and private spaces and creating a sometimes startling contrast between the two, including allowing glimpses of the rooms from the public areas and vice versa. The result is a stay that both defines and distinguishes the visitor experience at The Waterhouse at South Bund.
Large windows illuminate the sleek interiors, and many bedrooms have a terrace or balcony; hi-tech features (bedside control panel, iPod docking station, cable TV) are supplied in abundance. Table No. 1 is a casual restaurant that offers a refreshing look at contemporary European cuisine in a cosy, convivial atmosphere, under London chef Scott Melvin. But the hotel’s pièce de résistance - as in all the best Shanghainese hangouts - is the rooftop bar terrace, with its metropolitan and river panoramas.
