European trends, first hand
Air Berlin has certainly done well out of MMG Publishing over recent weeks as it ferried editorial and commercial staff back and forth between Gatwick and Nuremberg for the SMT and PCIM exhibitions.
With MMG’s publication portfolio including Electronics Assembly we have forged
strong links with both the purchasing and production communities, hence our desire to attend SMT. There seems little point owning a fully automated surface mount production line if your purchasing and logistics capability can’t keep it fed with components.
Likewise, if your components are flowing freely, you won’t want your shop
floor introducing manufacturing bottlenecks. There is no escaping it, purchasing and production must work hand-in-hand if European manufacturers are to remain competitive.
Later this year the MMG team will travel to Munich to visit Productronica, a second
opportunity this year to see how manufacturing technology will be influencing the way electronic components are packaged and delivered to the line. If nothing else, production innovations certainly keep purchasers on their toes.
Moving to PCIM, the show once again reinforced the simple fact: without a suitable
power supply an electronic product will certainly fail to meet its potential. This year highlighted how Europe remains a driving force in renewable energy, including its generation, distribution and consumption.
With many governments pushing their research funding in this direction I expect
power to remain high on the agenda of most product manufacturing businesses. Getting power right is essential for long-term success so purchasers must work closely with their design colleagues to make sure they buy the right parts at the right price.
