skin fromwithin
If you don’t treat skin internally you’re only doing half the job, says the iiaa’s Karen Deehan
Look around any beauty salon and you’ll see shelves stacked with an array of lotions and potions. While these play an important role, if you don’t treat skin internally as well as externally you’re only doing half the job.
For this reason, there is now a shift towards targeted nutritional supplements, known as nutraceuticals, which are designed to create healthy skin from within. This is exciting news for beauty therapists, because it means that you can offer your clients a more holistic approach.
Nutrition is the first step in skin care; if the body is making healthy skin cells to start with, the results of topical treatments will be greatly enhanced. Stocking professional-only nutraceuticals makes sound business sense; by combining nutritional supplementation with topical skin care, you can achieve amazing results and generate long-term customer loyalty.
big business
Supplements are already big business and the scope for tapping into this is huge. The market is worth £550million worldwide and in the UK alone it’s already worth £13.5 million. The likelihood is that many of your clients already take them, as the Food Standards Agency recently estimated that 43 percent of adults in the UK buy vitamins. This gives you a head start when persuading them to switch to the brand you stock, because they already agree with the concept of supplements.
To effectively sell a professional range of nutritional supplements you need to know how they differ from standard multivitamins. “It’s like asking what the
difference is between creams available on the high street and ones that can only be bought in-salon,” explains Lorraine Perretta, nutritionist for theAdvanced Nutrition Programme range of professional supplements.
“It’s all about the quality of the active ingredients and the levels at which they’re present. Professional-only supplements are targeted to specific skin concerns and contain only the very highest quality, purest nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body.”
