in the past. This means richer, more viscerally vibrant reds and a deeper palette of greens – the colour the human eye sees more intensely than any other colour. Designed to be process-ready, display makers can easily integrate QDEF™ into current manufactu- ring operations without retooling an existing line, as is the case with other technologies.
QDEF™ is engineered using Nanosys’ patented quantum dot materials dispersed in a polymer matrix and suspended within an optical film. The advanced material creates an improved quality white light with an unprecedented range of hues when excited by an energy-efficient blue LED. This results in better colour and less power consumption than when using white LEDs. Last year, Nanosys commercialized its quantum dot technology with the QuantumRail™, a process-ready component for smaller format LCDs that improves colour gamut and power efficiency. The company plans to expand its manufacturing capacity as it continues to commercialize its LCD and energy storage technologies. http://www.nanosysinc.com
ano Terra, Inc., a leading surface engineering and nanotechnology co-development company,
is acquiring Surface Logix, Inc. The Company is a drug development company which uses its expertise in biophysical chemistry to create new small molecu- le drugs with significantly improved pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties compa- red with current class leaders.
By using its proprietary chemistry platform – the Pharmacomer™ Technology Platform – Surface Logix

creates New Chemical Entities (NCEs) that respond dynamically to the various physiological microenvi- ronments in the human body. By enhancing molecu- lar functionality, Surface Logix is able to solve PK and PD problems not addressable with traditional medici- nal chemistry practices.
“Surface Logix is an excellent fit for Nano Terra since our business was also built on intellectual property from the Whitesides lab,” said Myer Berlow, CEO of Nano Terra. “We think we can achieve signifi- cant synergies through our proven co-development model. This acquisition opens the door to the use of Nano Terra’s technology in a variety of healthcare products.”
Nano Terra is a privately-held research and develop- ment company which has field-exclusive licenses to more than 50 patents on work done by co-founder George Whitesides at the renowned Whitesides Lab at Harvard University, where he is the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowers University Professor. Whitesides was the winner of the prestigious B. Franklin Medal in Chemistry in 2009. (See on page 32 Kadmon) http://www.surfacelogix.com
