School District Christens New Bus Facility with Safety Mural
At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, the transporta-
tion department for the School District of Manatee County, Fla., moved into a new facility. To commemorate the event, Walter Ralph offered to airbrush a mural that communicated a promise: “To Provide the Safest Form of Transportation to our Students and Employees.” “When our Supervisor of Vehicle Maintenance, Don Ross, ex-
pressed interest in having a mural airbrushed onto the wall of our hallway near the main entrance, it was a big honor but more importantly, it was the perfect opportunity to showcase our commitment to the department’s strategic vision,” said Ralph. Te wall was deemed the perfect place to make a big state-
ment about the transportation department’s mission and how staff members feel about being transportation professionals and the customers they serve daily. Ralph performed all the work free of charge on his day off and used some donated materials. “This is important because we have an aggressive money-sav-
ing mind set in our department, and the people I work with make contributions of their various tal- ents on a regular basis anyway,” added Ralph. “It’s just how we do things.” Te people that he chose to include in the mural are notice-
ably diverse, according to Ralph, something he did “to reflect on the diversity and wide variety of talents” in his department and the district as a whole. “No two people are the same; our management recognizes the
wide array of talents, experience and backgrounds and encourages every single staff member to exploit what we have to reach for the top,” explained Ralph. ■
